I don't know how to answer if the person doesn't leave an email or a way to get the answer to her/him. I can't do it in the comments.

Best way to contact me would be to look at one of the (free) patterns. Each one has my email in the top right corner. If you don't hear from me in a week, please resend your email. Sometimes I get really swamped with life happening or I am out of the country traveling. My husband is from England and I am from Germany and sometimes we go and see our families which we so love.

I appologize if my answer to you is delayed. But I love hearing from you all. And if anybody has an idea for a new symbol ... I am pretty much out of ideas.

Christahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995654286596128358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699670158720258869.post-17899266830983112972022-11-21T11:50:00.003-08:002022-11-21T11:50:30.775-08:00Computer programs can be frustrating
On all three of my blogs I sometimes share a file, especially Chrismon patterns or quilt/lace patterns. I upload all PDFs as "anybody with the link can see it" and that is how I add the link into the blogs. You click on it and the PDF opens.

For about 3 years now every so often somebody sends a share request to me because the file will not open. I am sure that is frustrating for those who want to have a look. Sometimes it takes a while for me to answer especially if I am out of the country and without internet. I am trying my best to make everybody happy.

Yesterday I spent some time googling to find a solution. I found one expert site where the question had been asked three years ago and the comments are still going strong. Nobody knows how to fix it. Everybody is of the unanimous opinion that it is a bug in the system and Microsoft doesn't care to fix it.

So, if you can't open one of my files but would like to do so, please write that share request and I will try my best.

* * *

Several years ago I also had a feature on the side of the blog that you could select to "subscribe". Blogger decided some time ago to not make that available any longer. I did find another way for that again recently because I don't often like to post a new blog on FaceBook. Unfortunately though I have seen that it only alerts you by sending you the link (which is fine) but not the whole blog. Well, one more click should be ok. There is advertising though in that email which you most likely want to ignore. Sorry.

After you added your email address you receive an email and need to accept (a step so you are not put on a mailing list by strangers). I will not know who is subscribing.

* * *

Best wishes to you all - Christa

PS: I am always very happy if a reader leaves a comment on the bottom. If you do it unanimously, please let me know who you are at the bottom.

Christahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995654286596128358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699670158720258869.post-44546344129881988832021-10-21T09:18:00.006-07:002021-10-21T09:18:42.548-07:00Another Advent calendar FINISHED!
Yeah! I am so happy! I was worried because of course there was a time issue.

I have written this before but here is it in a nutshell again. After all, all three are totally different. Each one is special.

It's a third Advent Calendar of this kind I made for my church St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Richmond, VA. The church ladies (ECW) is going to raffle it off. I think 1 ticket is $5 or 3 tickets are $10.

Every day you choose one Chrismon to add for the day starting December 1. That is quite satisfying to me. I have seen that a number of people have already looked at them but ... no comments. You know I would welcome comments. I am not fishing for praise. Only God needs to be praised. Input from fellow Chrismon makers could be helpful. There might also be thoughts about the meaning of each symbol I have not thought of myself. With other words ... feel free to criticize too.

And ... I am slowly running out of ideas. What symbol did I not design yet?

Designing the new patterns and also starting this year's Chrismon project for my church and my friends has also made me think about material sources.

I desperately needed wire. I found some time ago that the best wire to work with is Zebra wire. I found that I don't have issues with it breaking any more like I used to. That was often so frustrating. I also found that the best source to buy it is Fire Mountain Gems and Beads. They have 1/4 pound spools (which for a 26 gauge wire is about 115 yards). They have lots of different gauges and even colors. I take inventory and try to buy what I need in one order to cut down on postage.

Unfortunately Fire Mountain does not have the beads I usually need. For many years I bought those at Rufty's and I have shared this before.

But I found the same quality beads and pearls now also at DonnaKayBeads on etsy.com but for a much better price. Very recently I made a large order and could not believe how much I saved. Donna was most helpful and there was no postage since the order was large enough. I found it a bit difficult to find the kind/size of beads or pearls I needed but with the order came a sheet with all the different sizes and prices. Most helpful. There is a button to click "Message Donna" and you could probably ask for that list to be emailed to you. As I said, she is most helpful. If you order from her, you might tell her that Christa is a happy customer.

Most of my patterns use beads and/or pearls from either of these suppliers. A few patterns have special beads and I indicate on those patterns exactly where I got them. But of course you could substitute if you find similar ones (like the glass beads for the rainbow for example).

I hope you find this helpful!!! May be you have a helpful tip?

Christahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995654286596128358noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699670158720258869.post-36634731751130239802021-01-04T12:50:00.001-08:002021-01-04T12:50:53.290-08:00Harp
Meaning:

The word Harp is found about 50 times in the bible. It does do the work as God has given it. If the web is destroyed the spider starts again … and again … and again. It can do its work anywhere, even in a palace. "The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces" (Proverbs 30:28) So we too should not be afraid of tasks God gives us and try again and again if we are not successful right away.

The bible also uses the spider’s web in a warning way.

The story of Noah and the flood is written in Genesis 6-9. It starts with "The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth" and "the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind”. God wanted to destroy his creation. But The Lord found Noah to be a righteous man and saved him, his family and a remnant of all the world’s animals from the flood. He gave Noah detailed instructions for building the ark, e.g. which wood, which size, how tall the roof should be and how many animals to take.

When God ended the flood he made a covenant with Noah with the rainbow as the sign: "When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." (Genesis 9:16)

I found typos in the Jerusalem Cross pattern and the Keys pattern. Also, sometimes I use an old pattern again to make gifts and suddenly realize that there is an easier way to make that Chrismon and rewrite the pattern. So, I highly recommend that if you are getting ready to make something, go to the Index and open blog and the PDF of the wanted pattern. There could be a change.

I have two more new designs in my head. Wish me luck!Christahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995654286596128358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699670158720258869.post-37692050299119421312018-08-09T11:55:00.001-07:002019-01-02T16:46:54.113-08:00Keys

When I wanted to make a few more ornaments some time ago I realized that I did not have any more of the gold foil. I had ordered the first roll from the Internet and it was not available any longer. Yes, you will find that also happenes sometimes with the special size pearls or beads.

I searched in local craft stores too and finally decided on Plan-B. Craft store Michaels had a roll of this:
I cut a strip off a little wider then the leaf should be high. Peel the adhesive paper off and fold the strip double on itself. The white sides are now sticking to each other and you have gold on both sides. Cut like the directions say.Christahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995654286596128358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699670158720258869.post-65996391619612835402018-03-07T12:51:00.001-08:002018-03-07T13:06:20.984-08:00Jerusalem CrossI designed this Chrismon in memory of our trip to Israel last year in September. It was an incredible experience to walk where Jesus might have walked and many of his disciples. Of course I have blogged daily on this trip. If you would like to read about it, click on the tap to my main blog and then Travel!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> The Jerusalem Cross is known since the 11th century when the crusaders captured the city and made it its emblem.

This cross consists of a cross potent (or crutch cross) with a bar on each end. And one smaller greek cross with equal length arms in each quadrant.

There are several explanations found for this cross. — The large cross symbolizes Christ and the four smaller crosses the four Gospels. — Another belief is that the smaller crosses symbolize the four corners of the earth Jesus wanted his message carried to. — Another suggests the five-fold cross reminds us of the Five Wounds of Christ with the four smaller crosses symbolizing the four wounds on Jesus’ hands and feet and the larger cross his pierced heart.

Synagogues were houses of assembly to learn and study. Jews were required to travel to the temple in Jerusalem once a year to worship.

It is amazing how an insignificant thing like a manger, a feeding-trough for animals, can have such important meaning. Luke mentions the manger three times and this is the most known: “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7)

From the day of His birth, Jesus was destined to die on our behalf. To accomplish his work as Savior, Jesus offered his body and blood as a sacrifice for us and by accepting that sacrifice we find salvation.
In the words of our Post Communion Prayer:
“Eternal God, Heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. ...”
Thus, it is fitting that the Savior, at the start of his life, would be placed in a feeding-trough as a sign not only of who He is, but of how He will fulfill His purpose and effect our salvation.
When I asked her about it (with a certain thought in my mind) she told me that she only likes to do it with a purpose, not just for the sake of stitching. No need to hang anything on her walls any more. I asked her whether she would stitch something for me.
James is one of five and the siblings had arranged to meet in Windsor England (their hometown) in January 2015. I assembled a "kit" and sent it with him. I had cut the little AIDA squares and it only needs three different DMC colors. I had found 15 different Chrismon patterns in these books:

In May Jane came to visit and it was an opportunity to stitch the rest of the Chrismons.

I designed 9 so there would be the 24 needed for the Adventcalendar. I had to hurry to stay ahead of Jane. I will share my design here later too (have to make nice drawings first).

After Jane's work was done, it was my turn. I borrowed last year's raffle wallhanging from the lucky winner to test the size, discovering that this design would not work.

But I had bought a pattern which I thought would work and went to work.
... and cut the pieces with the 1/4 inch seam allowances. I used 505 spray basting on the back of the paper pattern so it wouldn't slip on the fabric. It worked really well.

This part was easy: green fabric circle good side down, batting, white back, pull tight and knot. Iron on the numbers.
The layering: frame front down, clear plastic circle, stitching face down (cut into a circle by using one of the clear circles for fussy cutting and drawing around it), a circle of batting and the back. Since I made a booklet with the explanations I had to be sure to put the correct number with the Chrismon.
Still laying face down I pressed the back down and dripped super glue all around but carefully and sparingly.
Advent calendars are originally a German custom. Ornaments are numbered from 1 to 24 which means you turn # 1 over on the 1st of December (#2 on 2nd of December etc) to reveal (in this case) a Chrismon, a symbol which reminds us of the real meaning of Christmas.
You know that one of my passions are Chrismons. At the beginning of this year I started the "Chrismons in Lace series". Here is the first page published in the Heartland Lace Guild newsletter.

Brigitte Bellon liked my idea and was incredibly generous with her patterns. She gave us permission to publish them and is supporting us/me in many ways.

My problem was how best to show-case the Chrismons. And here is what I came up with!

One German tradition is the Advent calendar. I found a picture of this quilted wallhanging on the Internet. No copyright violation because it is a free pattern.

I printed it large and calculated ... the size of the Chrismons ... the size of the squares ... how many squares and half squares needed. I placed dots and numbered them 1to 24.

It took quite a long time to decide how to handle the advent calendar "doors". I will not go into details of the ideas I had contemplated and discarded.

The wallhanging is finally done. I attached faceted crystal beads to hang the circles. They look a little like dew. That way it could be hanging year-round.

There is one on the pillow and almost done. I also still have several patterns from Brigitte Bellon, so no shortage there. And I have several ideas too. All I need is some time. Don't think it will be completed this year.

I can't say it "loud" enough: THANK YOU to Brigitte Bellon in Germany for all the wonderful patterns. She was and is always so generous sharing her patterns. All the above designs are featured in the Heartland Lace Guild newsletter Pillow Talk. And I still have some more. I love her designs in the clear and elegant forms.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brigitte.
Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet. “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)This is mentioned in the bible several more times and has been used as an important Christian symbol for Jesus Christ or God, often combined with other Christian symbols, from early Christianity and even appear in Roman catacombs.
And here is the PDF "Alpha and Omega" for you to download.

I have also made a VIDEO explaining what I mean with the up-wire and down-wire. Please let me know whether you find this helpful or what I could do different.

Please do not sell the patterns or the ornaments. If you give them as gifts, please always include the explanation of the symbol.

I would love to hear from all who are using my patterns. It would be nice to know that my efforts are not in vain. You find my email address on the pattern if you have any question about it. Happy to help.
Well, here it is.
While I have your attention ... if you do use any of my patterns, I so would like to hear from you. Better yet, I would love it if you would send pictures (of your group, your Christmas tree, your church' Christmas tree) and a little article what you and your group are doing, any suggestions, links to patterns somewhere else, I would be very grateful and would like to put it in a blog!!!

THANK YOU!
Oh oh, my supply is dangerously low. Time to fill up "my stash". So I updated my Excel-spreadsheet and thought I share it with you since it is done anyway.
I hope you find this helpful. Also, I was made aware that one of the patterns didn't open. I have fixed that. If you ever find a problem or mistake, please let me know. You find my email on every pattern.
This year I made 80 of the shell. The shell is especially significant to us this year since it is also the sign of the "Camino". This spring my dear husband James made the pilgrimage from St Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostella walking 500+ miles. He wrote a Blog every day if you are interested. It was an incredible experience for him.

And in July our first grandson William was baptized, also a very meaningful event for us.

Some lovely ladies in the church strung 56 for me - a big time saving for me.

First Sunday afternoon in December we had a workshop at the church. The Chrismons needed to be wrapped in the acid free green tissue paper. And then we each made a big Chrismon for the church tree. This is the best way to learn if they would like to make the smaller for their gift-giving at home.

When we were done we marched into church and hung the new additions. It's a good feeling for all.
The 2nd Sunday of Advent was "Chrismon Sunday". We had mailed the cards (explained here) about 10 days earlier and had blank ones ready for those who forgot (which is usually more then half ha-ha).
This is how we do it so it is fun but the service stays dignified: Our Rector explains the Chrismon symbol to the children during the children's sermon (I would have liked to take a picture but was't sure I should). Then he says a prayer over the Chrismons and asks The Lord that "...bless we pray these Chrismons and grant that those who look upon them may have their hearts drawn to things which can only be seen by the eye of faith through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN"
Just before the end of the service I slipped out, stood at the exit and gave each child his/her Christian ornament. Since we moved here in 2008 this was the 6th ornament. The children seem to love it.
